‘Loosing the Handkerchief’ A scene from the Brothers Grimm fairy tale 'The Goose Girl’.

This illustration is for the Golden illustration group challenge which was to illustrate a moment from a traditional Grimm’s fairy tale.

The scene is when the King’s daughter leans over the stream to drink and her handkerchief, with her mother’s blood on it which is protecting her, falls into the stream and floats away unnoticed. This leaves the King’s daughter unknowingly helpless and at the mercy of her jealous waiting-maid.

I find this moment in the story quite memorable as it is when the King’s daughter has become vulnerable and is no longer under the protection of her mother. The sense of uneasiness and impending danger caused by such as small seemingly innocent action taking place is unnerving and reminds me that it only takes a small change to make big things happen, whether good or bad.
